Saint Joseph's College of Maine Monks Rally to defeat Colby-Sawyer in OT, 4-3

Freshman Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.) scored three goals and sophomore Abbie Jacques (Mount Vernon, Maine) hit pay dirt 92 seconds into overtime to lift Saint Joseph's College (9-6, 6-2 GNAC) past Colby-Sawyer College (9-4, 5-2 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Waryas kicked off the game scoring on a penalty corner play at the 1:23 mark, but the Chargers countered four minutes later when Aoife Daly (Harwich, Mass.) found the back of the cage off an assist from Taylor Gaudette (North Conway, N.H.).

The hosts grabbed the lead in the 10th minute when first year Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) tapped home a centering pass from junior Aleah Murph (Portland, Maine). The 2-1 lead remained until the 22nd minute when sophomore Courtney Larson (Auburn, Maine) converted a penalty stroke to make it a 3-1 game.

The Monks took advantage of a power play opportunity after a yellow card was issued to a Colby-Sawyer player at the 39:51 mark, as Waryas put the visitors on the board for the first time since early in the first quarter with a strike less than a minute later.

Saint Joseph's poured on the offensive pressure in the fourth frame and the efforts paid off when Waryas scored for the third time in the 49th minute. Jacques was credited with an assist on the game-tying tally.

St. Joe's had four penalty corner attempts during the remainder of regulation – including one as time expired - but failed to convert the winner until Jacques netted her second goal of the year at the 1:32 mark of the first overtime period.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (14-7) and shots on goal (8-5) while both teams earned nine penalty corner attempts on the afternoon.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC sophomore Kassidy Collins (Gardiner, Maine) made a pair of saves in the victory while Colby-Sawyer senior Lauren Wilkinson (Lynn, Mass.) posted four stops in the stunning setback.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's is now 7-0 all-time versus Colby-Sawyer College. The three-goal tally is the most scored in a game by the Chargers in the history of the series.
