The Bowdoin men's soccer team opened the season with a 6-0 win over the University of New England, spurred by a Harry Cooper hat-trick.
The Polar Bears begin the year with a 1-0-0 record. The Nor'Easters are 0-3-0 on the season. Bowdoin is undefeated all-time against UNE, improving to 24-0 against their neighbors from Biddeford.
Game Highlights
- Bowdoin scored the season's first goal just three minutes into the beginning of the 2022 athletic calendar. Minseo Bae served the ball to the top of the box where Harry Cooper played it right-footed through a defender and then left through a second. Cooper fired a right-footed shot into the far corner.
- Charlie Ward scored Bowdoin's second goal of the game five minutes later. Bae put a quick touch forward into the box that was collected by Ward. Ward played through the diving goalie and made it 2-0.
- Carlton Steinberg scored on a PK to extend Bowdoin's lead midway through the first.
- Bowdoin closed out the half with a goal in the final 20 seconds. A misplay by a UNE defender off Mateo Pacelli's cross from the left corner allowed Ronaldo Cabral to pick off the ball and slot another tally.
- Bae orchestrated another goal 17 minutes into the second half with a cross from the right corner that deflected off one defender into another. The resulting rebound kicked out to Cooper who put away another goal.
- Cooper capped the hat-trick with a successful free kick from five yards beyond the box. Cooper launched a shot that went bar-down to make it 6-0.
- Cooper, who entered the game with two career goals, recorded his first collegiate hat trick in the win.
- Bowdoin owned a 30-4 advantage in shots, including a 17-1 margin in shots on goal in the match.
- Michael Webber was forced to make one save in the shutout, preserving Bowdoin's shutout streak against the Nor'easters which dates back to 1996.
