Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) criticized House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s proposal to raise the debt limit while imposing widespread cuts to critical federal programs. Pingree released the following statement:

“Raising the debt limit is a routine, bipartisan obligation, yet Speaker McCarthy has orchestrated a months-long debt ceiling standoff that has put the United States on the brink of economic crisis. The American people voted for and overwhelmingly support the progress ushered in by Democrats and President Biden—and now, Republicans are threatening to undo it all. This so-called plan is riddled with extreme MAGA proposals that would rollback Democrats’ climate progress, bail out Big Oil and the 1%, and do nothing to lower costs for the middle class. This is yet another glaring and dangerous display of Republicans’ inability to govern. House Democrats simply cannot and will not allow Speaker McCarthy and the GOP to hold crucial aid like SNAP, student debt relief, and Medicaid hostage. It’s a nonstarter.”
