Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, representing Maine's 1st district since 2009, has voiced her concerns on social media regarding the involvement of Elon Musk in U.S. Treasury operations and the constitutional powers of Congress. Her statements have sparked discussions about governmental oversight and constitutional authority.

On February 2, 2025, Pingree questioned Elon Musk's role in government financial systems. She asked, "Did anyone elect Elon Musk? Has Congress confirmed him for an actual position? No? Then why was he given sweeping, unfettered access to the U.S. Treasury payment systems?"

The following day, February 3, 2025, Pingree addressed constitutional concerns over fiscal management by the administration. She stated that "The Constitution is clear on Congress’s power of the purse. The Administration’s directive to 'impound' funds from Congress is unconstitutional." She further mentioned plans to challenge these actions legally.

On the same day, she outlined congressional powers in response to administrative actions. Pingree noted that "Without getting too deep in the constitutional weeds, Congress has several powers at its disposal," including spending authority, investigative power, legal challenges, and impeachment proceedings.
