Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, who represents Maine’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, shared her views on various issues through a series of tweets. As a ranking member of the Appropriations Democrats Interior and Environment Subcommittee, she expressed support for conservation efforts and criticized recent federal decisions impacting international agreements.
On January 24, 2025, Pingree highlighted her role as a ranking member of the Appropriations Democrats Interior and Environment Subcommittee. She expressed pride in supporting initiatives like the Giant Panda Conservation Program. She encouraged people visiting Washington D.C. to take the opportunity to meet Bao Li and Qing Bao at the Smithsonian Institution. "As ranking member of @AppropsDems Interior and Environment Subcommittee, which oversees funding for @smithsonian, I’m proud to support initiatives like the Giant Panda Conservation Program."
Later that day, Pingree criticized a decision by President regarding withdrawal from an international agreement. She compared it to previous actions such as withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO), describing it as poor leadership detrimental to future generations. Pingree mentioned that over 130 House Democrats joined her in urging the President to reconsider this withdrawal due to its significant implications. "Like pulling us out of the WHO, this is just bad leadership."
In another tweet posted at the same time, Pingree further elaborated on her disapproval of withdrawing from the Paris Agreement. She characterized this move as "petty and shortsighted," stating it contradicts scientific consensus and hampers international negotiations crucial for addressing global crises. "The President's decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement isn’t just petty and shortsighted."
