Chellie Pingree, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Maine's 1st district since 2009, recently shared several updates on social media. Born in Minneapolis and currently residing in North Haven, Pingree has been an active political figure since her time in the Maine Senate from 1992 to 2000.
On December 10, 2024, Pingree announced a significant policy change regarding work permits for immigrants and asylum-seekers. She stated that "@DHSgov is permanently increasing the automatic extension for immigrant and asylum-seeker work permits from 180 days to 540 days—less than a week after @SenAngusKing, @GovJanetMills, and I called for this change."
In another post on the same day, she emphasized the positive impact of this decision by saying "This is GREAT news. Not just for Maine immigrants and asylum-seekers (and their families), but for the many businesses that won’t have to scramble to find new employees—and for the communities that these new Mainers have come to call home."
Later that evening, Pingree addressed energy-efficiency standards through another tweet. She clarified her stance against a recent bill by stating "Here’s the reality: Energy-efficiency standards are *not* bans. They’re commonsense tools that save Americans money while cutting greenhouse gas emissions." She further explained her opposition by noting "I voted NO on this ridiculous bill because Americans deserve real cost-saving measures, not more empty campaign promises."
