On May 31, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) voted to prevent catastrophic default, releasing the following statement:
“Tonight, the Democrats voted to prevent Republicans from destroying the U.S. economy. By voting ‘yes’ on this imperfect compromise, we are again the only adults in the room.
“This is one of the most challenging votes I have taken in my career and one of the most difficult votes the House has taken in some time. For months now, House Republicans have held America hostage to extract a terrible price on the social safety net.
“Americans must know: These negotiations were unprecedented because Republicans threatened to destroy our national credit to score political points with their extremist caucus. The choice should have never come down to taking food away from older Americans or crashing the economy. That’s why I will vigorously use my seats on the Agriculture and Appropriations Committees to protect programs like SNAP from further cuts.
“I thank President Biden and his team for managing impossible demands from the Republican side. With our economy pushed to the brink, we had little room to negotiate.”
