The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men’s basketball team suffered a heart breaker 52-51 to Vermont Technical College (VTC) on Saturday, February 18.
Head Coach Matt Richards paid tribute to his five graduating players prior to what would be their final regular season game at The HUB. Those were DeSean Cromwell, Jack Pyzynski, Myles Brown, Bode Meader, and Luke Gabloff.
The Seawolves put together a fast start, finishing the first half 21-points ahead of the Knights. However, VTC chipped away stifling the SMCC offense to 12 points spanning the final 20 minutes of action. Jaylon Calvin hit a fall-away three-pointer inside the final minute of regulation to complete the comeback.
Senior captain DeSean Cromwell (Biddeford, Maine) finished the game with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and sophomore captain Jack Pyzynski (Saco, Maine) finished with 11 points and six rebounds.
VTC’s Calvin recorded a career game of 19 points, 10 steals, and 13 rebounds and nine assists. His teammate, BJ Jenkins, totaled 16 points and 3 rebounds.
Coach Richards stated, “Today was result was disappointing. However, give credit to VTC. They played tough and executed really well down the stretch.”
SMCC drops to 16-9 overall and 8-6 in conference play.
The Seawolves will host the quarterfinal round of the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) tournament next weekend. Stay tuned for the release of seedings and game details.
