Bowdoin College Women's Basketball Dominates Second Half to Complete Season Sweep of Bates

The Bowdoin College women's basketball team dominated the second half to pull away from Bates in a 71-63 win on Friday night in Morrell Gymnasium. The Polar Bears improve to 14-7 (3-4 NESCAC) as they complete a season sweep of their Lewiston neighbors, who fall to 9-10 (2-5 NESCAC).

 

Game Highlights

  • The Bobcats outscored Bowdoin 19-14 in the second quarter to carry a slim 27-26 lead into the half.
  • The Polar Bears came out firing in the third quarter, however, as a 10-0 run, capped  by a Sela Kay jumper, gave the hosts a 36-27 advantage.
  • Bowdoin pushed the lead to as many as 15 points later in the quarter following a steal and lay-in by Maria Belardi and finished the period with a 48-36 lead after outscoring Bates 22-9 in the frame.
  • The Polar Bears pushed the lead to as many as 18 points early in the fourth quarter before a late Bates flurry closed the gap to as few as six points with under a minute to play.
  • The lead was never in danger, however, as Bowdoin went 5-5 from the free throw line down the stretch to preserve the victory.
By The Numbers

  • Bowdoin's defense was outstanding, forcing 17 turnovers that they cashed in for 29 points on the night while grabbing 14 offensive rebounds for 16 second chance points.
  • A balanced attack saw Sydney Jones lead Bowdoin with 17 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks.
  • Sela Kay had 13 while Annie Boasberg posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.
  • Callie Godfrey led an excellent effort by the Bowdoin bench, scoring 12 points and gathering six rebounds.
  • Meghan Graff led Bates with 23 points.
