The Bowdoin College women's basketball team came within a whisker of completing a historic comeback on Monday, falling just short at Cortland State University, 70-66. Despite a resilient second half comeback, the Polar Bears fall to 11-6 while the Red Dragons improve to 14-2.

Game Highlights

  • The Red Dragons opened a 21-9 lead early, but Bowdoin was able to close the gap to 21-14 at the end of the first quarter thanks a three-pointer from Sela Kay and layup from Maria Belardi.
  • Cortland took full command with a 23-7 second quarter as the hosts ended the first half with ten three-pointers and a seemingly insurmountable 44-21 advantage.
  • The Red Dragons extended their lead to as many as 25 points early in the second half before Bowdoin began its dramatic comeback.
  • Spurred by 11 points from Sydney Jones, Bowdoin clawed back into the contest with a 14-0 surge, and closed the gap to just eight points, 56-48, entering the fourth quarter.
  • Cortland kept Bowdoin at bay until the five minute mark, when a three-pointer from Annie Boasberg and a layup by Sela Kay cut the lead to four points, 63-59, with 4:11 to go.
  • Bowdoin kept chipping away until consecutive layups by Jones and Callie Godfrey made it a one point game, 67-66, with 48 seconds remaining.
  • The Polar Bears had a pair of possessions to take the lead, but missed a potential go-ahead layup and then committed a late turnover in the final 15 seconds as Cortland held on to win.
By The Numbers

  • After being outscored 44-21 in the opening half, Bowdoin outscored Cortland 45-26 in the second half.
  • Both teams finished at 41% shooting for the game, and despite Cortland knocked down 12 three-pointers to Bowdoin's seven, the Polar Bears were able to cash in for 20 points off turnovers.
