Bowdoin College Men's Hockey Returns to Action with 5-1 Win at USM

The Bowdoin men's ice hockey team opened 2023 with a commanding 5-1 road win at the University of Southern Maine on Sunday afternoon.

 

The Polar Bears are 6-1-1 on the season as the Huskies drop to 2-10-1.

 

Game Highlights

  • Bowdoin took the lead 5:30 into the first frame. Jimmy Duffy was behind the net and fed Jesse Lycan on the left post. Lycan took a quick backhanded shot and put the puck away.
  • Ethan Kimball won a clean faceoff on the left dot and skated through the circle before sliding a pass to the far side for Chris Brown. Brown easily finished off the backdoor play at 12:33.
  • Just two minutes later, Luke Wheeler made it 3-0. Cam Berube fired a shot from the left point that deflected in traffic and kicked out to Wheeler. Wheeler had an uncontested look on net from the inside edge of the circle.
  • After being held scoreless in the second period, Albert Washco put another Bowdoin goal on the board 5:18 into the third. Skating left to right above the crease, Washco wristed a shot past Kyle Penton.
  • Andy Stoneman tallied the final Polar Bear goal ten minutes later. On the right post, Stoneman snuck a shot through the pads to make it 5-0.
  • USM spoiled the shutout with a rebuttal goal in the next 20 seconds. Dylan Hullaby drifted right to left, high in the zone, and fired a slapshot for the high slot.

By the Numbers

  • The Huskies played a clean game and allowed no Bowdoin power plays.
  • USM went 0-for-2 on the power play.
  • Alex Kozic made 22 stops for the Polar Bears.
  • Penton made 35 saves for the Huskies.
