Bowdoin College Men's Soccer Advances to National Quarterfinal With 3-1 Win Over Oneonta

The Bowdoin men's soccer team continued its post-season journey with a 3-1 win over Oneonta on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears are 13-1-5 on the season with a 2-0-1 record thus far in the NCAA tournament after advancing out of last weekend's regional final with a penalty kick win. The Oneonta Dragons conclude the season with a 15-3-3 record after knocking off Tufts in the regional final to advance and face the Polar Bears.

Game Highlights

  • The Dragons went ahead in the 12th minute. Owen Siegel took a free kick from 20 yards outside the box and found Lucas Fecci on the far right side. Fecci elevated to head a shot that arced over the head and outstretched hands of Michael Webber.
  • Felipe Rueda Duran scored his first collegiate goal in the 15th minute and pulled Bowdoin into a 1-1 tie. Charlie Ward stepped in on an Oneonta pass in the back field and picked off the ball. Ward found Rueda Duran streaking down the field from the right side, moving center. Rueda Duran capitalized on his one-on-one opportunity and put a composed shot to the far left post.
  • Rueda Duran set up Bowdoin's go-ahead goal nine minutes later. A give-and-go pass between classmates Rueda Duran and Huck at the top of the penalty area freed Huck to challenge the keeper. Huck took a sliding shot on net as the goalie challenged the play, ultimately finding the net.
  • Webber denied a late first half penalty kick, diving to his right side, to keep the Polar Bears ahead.
  • Charlie Ward added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute as Rueda Duran tallied his second helper of the game. Rueda Duran chipped a short pass to Ward on his right. Ward cleanly put a quick shot to the near post, making it 3-1.

By the Numbers

  • Rueda Duran had one goal and two assists, pitching in on all of Bowdoin's goals.
  • Webber made five saves to help extend the season.
  • Nate Hanna made two stops for the Dragons.
  • Oneonta held an 11-7 edge in shots and slight 6-5 shots on goal advantage.
  • Both teams earned three corner kicks.
