Saint Joseph's College of Maine Unable to Complete Comeback at UMaine-Farmington

UMaine-Farmington (3-1) edged Saint Joseph's College (2-3), 84-83, in a hotly-contest non-conference men's basketball contest on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Trailing 49-36 at intermission, the Monks kicked off the second half by making four three-pointers during a 16-4 run to cut the deficit to one point (53-52) with 13:45 remaining. The in-state rivals traded blows for the next two minutes before freshman guard John Paul Frazier (York, Maine) nailed a three to lift the visitors to a 62-60 lead – their first advantage of the night – with 11:32 left.

After swapping the lead on four occasions on the subsequent two minutes, St. Joe's posted an 11-4 outbreak to claim a 78-72 cushion with 5:15 on the clock. Senior forward Ashtyn Abbott (Farmingdale, Maine) netted nine of the Monks' points during the surge.

The Monks were ahead by an 83-78 score after grad Nicholas Curtis (Windham, Maine) hit a pair of freebies with 2:15 left, but UMF standout guard Terion Moss took the game into his own hands in the closing minutes with six unanswered points, including the go-ahead layup with 17 seconds on the game clock.

Saint Joseph's had one last chance to come out on top, but UMF center Jack Kane blocked a Frazier shot in the closing seconds to preserve the Beavers' victory.

STATS OF THE GAME:

UMF held a 54-32 advantage in points in the paint and scored 19 points off 18 SJC turnovers…the Monks have lost twice by one point so far this season.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Abbott was dominant in the setback and posted career-highs of 27 points and 14 rebounds to go with three steals; he made 11-of-16 shots from the floor – including a 4-for-5 effort from beyond the arc – and pulled down six offensive caroms
  • Frazier added 14 points and five boards and was 4-for-6 from downtown
  • Graduate Griffin Foley (Portland, Maine) posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists
  • Curtis chipped in with 11 points and three assists
  • Junior guard Camryn Yorke (Auburn, Maine) contributed five points, seven assists, and three boards
LEADERS – UMAINE-FARMINGTON:

  • Moss was 16-for-24 from the floor with 35 points, five steals, and four assists
  • Kane scored 17 points with six blocked shots and five rebounds
  • Nathan Poulin came off the bench to tally 10 points and five caroms
  • Kyle Donlin added six rebounds and four assists
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss Saint Joseph's falls to 54-25 all-time versus UMaine-Farmington and has now dropped three-consecutive games to the Beavers.
