Brandeis University (5-6-1) blanked Saint Joseph's College (11-4-1), 2-0, in a non-conference men's soccer contest on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Brandeis got all the scoring they would need in the 38th minute. Senior Sancho Maroto Tobias (Acton, Mass.) took a nice feed from sophomore John Loo (Easton, Conn.) at the top left of the 18-yard box. His strike went off the right post and past SJC keeper Mike Sheridan (Folsom, Pa.).
In the 72nd minute, it was Maroto Tobias again, taking a free kick from 20 yards out. He sent it past the wall and inside the near-right post for the extra insurance.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brandeis controlled play, outshooting the Monks, 18-6, including 9-2 in shots on goal.
- Corner kicks were even at 4-all, while Brandeis was whistled for 16 fouls – 12 in the second half – compared to 10 for the visitors.
- Judge senior Aiden Guthro (Newburyport, Mass.) made two saves for his fourth shutout of the season and the 10th of his career.
- Sheridan had seven stops in the losing effort for SJC.
- Brandeis snapped a four-match losing streak, all in UAA play.
- SJC had won seven in a row entering the match.
- This was the first meeting between the two schools since the 2016 NCAA Division III Tournament, when the Judges defeated St. Joseph's, 3-0, in the second round.
Saint Joseph's closes out the regular season with a conference game at Dean College on Wednesday. Kick-off is set for 3:00 PM.
