Maine College of Art Welcoming Our New MAT candidates

We are pleased to announce the official start of the summer institute for 12 new candidates making up the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) class of 2023. The MAT summer institute kicked off on Monday, August 1, and candidates began fieldwork in the Portland Public Schools in collaboration with LearningWorks yesterday.

As the first section of the 10-month MAT program, the summer institute builds a basic awareness of teaching and learning that deepens over Fall and Spring semesters. Candidates will examine a range of theories of human development, learning, and creativity while investigating contemporary methods of art education and multicultural studies. Candidates will consider how to choose frameworks that appeal to young artists with varying needs and design lessons that foster critical and creative thinking during their field placements.

Other activities the MAT class will engage in through the summer include child observation studies, a guest lecture series, and a field trip to CMCA Rockland to tour the galleries and meet with the education department.
