Happy birthday to Bowdoin! Bowdoin was chartered on June 24, 1794, by the General Court in Boston, for Maine was a part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts until 1820. It was named for former Massachusetts governor James Bowdoin, whose son James Bowdoin III was an early benefactor.
