North Yarmouth Fire Rescue Employee Spotlight Retired Member Richard Lowell

491e

This week’s employee spotlight will highlight retired member Richard Lowell. Richard joined the department on November 1, 1969. Richard retired from the department on November 1, 2021. At the time of his retirement, we had ordered Richard a white helmet and had all the members of the department sign it. We also ordered a white shield for the helmet with his hire and retirement date on it. Unfortunately, with COVID, order times for items take longer than expected.

One may ask why a white shield and a white helmet. The simple answer being is that Richard was a very active member of the department and within the community. During Richards time with the department, he spent a few years as Deputy Fire Chief. When he retired, he was the primary engineer for Tank 53 (affectionately called the WATER HOG). Tank 53 was Richard’s pride and joy. He was also a great mentor for all members young and old. He would happily take the time to show anyone new to the department the ropes and the roles of Tank 53 or any piece of equipment as that goes. He took a shine to our live-in students and the live-in students grew very fond of Richard.

Richard shield finally came in this week. We were able to present him his new helmet today while the department helped him take care of a brush pile at his residence. Thanks to all the members that assisted today. When you see Richard in the community, please take the time and thank him for his years of dedication and service to the Town of North Yarmouth.
