In September 2019 the Town of Yarmouth received a grant from the Maine Historic Preservation
Commission to further its work to recognize, preserve, and enhance its historic resources. The grant
is funding the development of a draft historic preservation ordinance and historic districts to protect
historic buildings. The area of focus is the historic Yarmouth village. The ordinance work builds on
the 2018 Architectural Survey of more than 760 historic structures in the village, conducted by
Margaret Gaertner, Historic Building Consultant. The survey project was coordinated by the Town
in partnership with the Yarmouth Historical Society and Village Improvement Society. The
architectural survey information is posted on the town website. These projects, identified in
Yarmouth’s 2010 Comprehensive Plan, are being led by the Department of Planning and
Development and the Historic Resources Steering Committee. The Historic Resources Steering
Committee is developing recommendations to present to the Planning Board and Town Council for
their consideration. Public input is an important part of developing the recommendations.
