Mid Coast Senior Health Center was under the ownership of Mainehealth during the first quarter of 2026, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) shows. Situated in Cumberland County, this nursing home has been part of Mainehealth since Jan. 1, 2021.
The facility operates as a non-profit nursing home.
For that quarter, the center received an overall CMS rating of five, surpassing Maine’s state nursing home average of 2.9. The CMS rating system assesses homes on several key elements, including health inspections, staffing levels, and care quality.
During the first quarter of 2026, records indicate Mid Coast Senior Health Center provided care to an average of 41.3 residents per day and had 42 licensed beds. It is not affiliated with a hospital.
CMS data also showed the facility had no recorded fines or penalties during this period.
Cumberland County counted five non-profit nursing homes during the same timeline.
Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that the nation’s population of older adults continues to rise as the younger population contracts. From 2020 to 2024, there was a 13% increase in Americans age 65 and older, while the population under 18 declined by 1.7%. The growth in the older adult population saw an expansion from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 study estimates that close to 28 million adults in this age category, or about half, could require long-term services and supports. A projected third of these may ultimately need nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
