Chellie Pingree, a Congresswoman representing Maine’s 1st district since 2009, expressed her concerns regarding recent developments involving control over governmental systems. On February 2, 2025, she issued a series of statements via social media addressing these issues.

In one statement, Pingree described the situation as “a hostile takeover of our government by an unelected billionaire,” emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability. She called for an “immediate Congressional investigation” to provide answers about how this situation was permitted to occur. “We need to call this illegal and unconstitutional act what it is: a hostile takeover of our government by an unelected billionaire.”

Pingree also criticized Elon Musk’s involvement in the matter, labeling it as “absolute insanity.” She expressed concern about the potential repercussions on both the economy and citizens’ lives. “The idea that Elon musk and his cronies now have control over these levers of government is absolute insanity.”

Further detailing her concerns, Pingree highlighted the importance of these systems in managing financial transactions for government agencies, including Social Security checks and tax refunds. She underscored the sensitivity of information handled by these systems. “For those who don’t know, these systems handle trillions of dollars in payments submitted by agencies across the government—including Social Security checks and tax refunds.”
