At a recent hearing focused on the Fiscal Year 2026 budget request for the U.S. Department of Justice, Senator Susan Collins addressed concerns regarding illegal marijuana operations in Maine with Attorney General Pam Bondi. Senator Collins, who chairs the Appropriations Committee, sought clarification on how federal law enforcement is aiding state and local authorities in combating these activities linked to transnational Chinese criminal organizations.

Senator Collins highlighted previous discussions with FBI Director Patel about increasing resources and intelligence efforts to address these illegal operations. She expressed concerns about the involvement of human trafficking and money laundering, potentially tied to the fentanyl trade.

“Could you provide me with an update on the deployment of federal resources so that our sheriffs, which have led the way, and our state and local law enforcement in Maine, get the help that they need?” Senator Collins asked during the hearing.

Attorney General Bondi assured her that multiple federal agencies are actively involved in addressing this issue. “We are directly involved in many of those cases. We are looking at that closely, and we will continue to fight that and research that,” Bondi stated.

Senator Collins has been persistent in addressing this issue over recent years. In response to constituent concerns raised in 2022, she reached out to various officials within law enforcement agencies urging action against illegal growing operations. Her efforts have included questioning former government officials about their responses to these challenges and seeking updates from current leaders.
