At a recent hearing in Washington, D.C., Senator Susan Collins engaged Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy in a discussion about budgetary concerns impacting rural airports and maritime workforce institutions. The focus was on proposed cuts to the Essential Air Service (EAS) program and support for institutions like Maine Maritime Academy.
During the hearing, Senator Collins emphasized the significance of the EAS program for rural communities, particularly in Maine. She stated, “In Maine, we have five airports that would not have commercial air service but for the Essential Air Service program.” These airports include Augusta, Waterville, Hancock County-Bar Harbor, Rockland, and Presque Isle. Highlighting its importance for economic development and access to medical treatment and tourism, she asked Secretary Duffy how he planned to maintain air service to these areas without adequate funding.
Secretary Duffy responded by expressing his intention to improve program efficiencies and reduce costs while acknowledging the program’s importance. He assured Senator Collins of his commitment to collaborate with the committee as they address these challenges. “I do understand how meaningful Essential Air Service is for so many communities across the country,” he said.
Senator Collins also addressed the status of Maine Maritime Academy’s new training vessel during her conversation with Secretary Duffy. She highlighted the academy’s reputation for producing skilled mariners and expressed anticipation for the completion of their new state-of-the-art vessel. Senator Collins invited Secretary Duffy to visit once it reaches Maine’s coast.
Secretary Duffy praised the shipbuilding efforts underway and underscored America’s need to invest in this industry due to its strategic importance. “We have ceded this territory to Japan, South Korea, to China,” he noted. He emphasized revitalizing American shipbuilding through vision and leadership while ensuring that trained mariners are ready to operate these vessels.
The dialogue reflects ongoing discussions regarding transportation funding priorities and workforce development within key sectors affecting rural America.
